SOLSC: Is Your Mind Ever Like Mine?

Is your mind ever like mine? Thinking of a great idea to write about, searching for paper, and then blanking out only to research again. Finally the idea comes.

I wake up in the morning and begin reviewing my day’s activities. One thought quickly, almost instantaneously connects to another and then another and then I’m wondering: where did I begin and what was I trying not to forget?

Paper. Paper. I have to find paper. Can’t let the idea slip away. Pen, Pen, Pen – aw, there you are. MUST jot it down before it fleets away.

Those words. How did my idea go? Ohhhh, Think, thhhiiinnnkkk. Think. Calm.

Breathe.

In slowly. Out. Breeeethe innnn.  Ouuut.

I feel like Jazim in Nikki Grimes’s book, Jazmin’s Notebook, grabbing a gum wrapper to write her poem before the perfect wording disappears.

Was it the coffee idea? (not today.)

Kim, my cat, curling up in my lap? (Not this either.)

My kids? (Blank. Searching.)

What is that idea?

I think through my morning routine. Think. think. think. What do I have to do today? (A list begins to be bulletted out.)

Got it! I want to slice about my writing experience with Mrs. Garber’s class yesterday. The school prompt job. The idea of having my wish come true – a children’s librarian.

Awesome! Now I can post.

Is you mind ever like mine?

This was a fun post. I like how you chose to capture this moment, rather than the idea that finally came back to your mind. You explained it well!

I love your blog background as well.

  2. Mine is like that alot. Usually I create wonderful blog posts while I swim laps. Then I get out of the pool, and I completely forget what I just created in the pool. Drives me crazy! 🙂

  3. That’s exactly how my mind works! Only it’s not just misplaced ideas I’m hunting for. It includes the keys, my coffee cup, my kids…you know, anything not attached to me.

    Fun post!

What a fun way to do the post, plus, yes indeed is my answer. I have so many paths my brain follows that most times they bump into each other! Ideas for work, ideas for how to be efficient in the house cleaning, laundry & cooking, lists for my teachers, my meetings, goals, priorities, and so on. I didn’t know about the gum wrapper poem so now I have to note to look it up. You have just mimed my life, Mary Helen! Nice that there’s a bit of a breather on the weekend!

My mind is just like yours! In fact, my husband makes fun of me because I´ll jump from one topic to another seemingly unrelated one so quickly while I´m talking to him. I love how you showed all the different leaps your mind took on the way to remembering your idea!

  6. Katie says:

All the time Mary Helen, all the time. I have to admit that I’m dying to know about the idea. I hope that’s tomorrow’s slice!

That was my mind yesterday. I started something this morning and left for shopping. At least I had something started today!!! You did fine on your slice–little things that are on our minds!!

  8. sprice says:

Oh, I’m more like you than you’ll ever know. Not one day goes by that I am not looking for something or trying to remember something. What is that??? I love your post. Not only does it make me feel better, but it was fun. Oh, I had one more things to say, but i forgot! Thanks for sharing! 🙂 Happy Slicing! 🙂

  9. I have so many ideas, and when I sit down to write none of them sound so interesting any more! I enjoy the journey of your thought process…especially that inner voice. Great minds think alike.

  10. capewriter says:

Yes. Completely. Incidentally, this is why I didn’t blog most of January and February. I would have rock-star ideas while walking down the hall or driving or in between comments in a conversation, but definitely not when I was ready to write. And, just like you, once I’m there I seem to travel the well-worn route of my writing territories… Maybe we should resort to writing our hands? Love the honesty, Mary Helen. Your comic spin and inner thoughts make me want to read your slice again :).

Wow Mary Helen…we are so much alike! That is how a lot of my days start….and end….
    Love it!

    That was me this morning!

I love your lines where did I begin and what was I trying not to forget? I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night, thinking of possibilities . . . this can’t go on all month! When will my brain calm down and let me sleep? Oh, it happened tonight in the middle of my student’s play!

  14. Donna Smith says:

Well, yeah. I was hoping that was normal.

  15. Tammy says:

Is that why you carry notebooks and sticky notes wherever you go! Always ready for an idea.

I loved reading your inner mind workings. This happens to me a lot. I usually start drafting in my mind as I walk, then when I get home, it has evaporated. Now there is something to record it in my pocket. I thought I could use Suri on my phone to take notes, but she’s not so smart. That may be a future post. Enjoyed this immensely.
